The All-Playboy Marriage is coming to an end

Kris and Anna Benson have filed for divorce on Thursday in Atlanta. The petition for divorce claims the marriage is "irretrievably broken." I think this marriage has been in the frits since Kris was traded to Baltimore at the end of last year. The Mets say she wasn’t the reason he was traded but it’s hard to not believe it. Anna is a pretty brash woman, doesn’t care what comes out of her mouth or who’s listening. If you followed the news and the timing of the trade it’s pretty easy to see the writing on the wall. It was Anna that blasted the Mets organization after they signed Carlos Delgado. He has refused to stand for the playing of “God Bless America.” She was quoted as saying, “How are they going to sit there and say it's so controversial when they sign someone like Delgado, who turns his back on our flag?" She was speaking about the fact that there was speculation in the city that she was going bare her birthday suit and Mets management wasn’t too thrilled with the idea. They didn’t want any more bad publicity or distractions around the team. It’s pretty clear that Anna cost her husband much money from endorsement opportunities from playing in New York. What turns out to be the Mets loss will be the Orioles gain and Kris’s loss will be every guy’s gain.

South Carolina successfully defends NIT Title

South Carolina successfully defended its NIT Title beating Michigan tonight by the score of 76 64. Yes I meant to say South Carolina because I refuse to call them USC since they aren't the real USC. It's hard for me to say nice things about SC since I'm a huge Clemson fan but I've got to tip my hat to them. I'm not sure if this is a dubious record or not but they are just the second school to ever win the NIT back to back. They joined St. Johns as the only schools with that distinction. Though when St. Johns won their titles when the NIT was the only post-season tournament and not the second tier tournament the NIT is considered to be today.

But SC deserves a lot of credit. I've never seen a team get kicked to the ground get up and just dominate like they did at the end of the year. In fact to say that this season was a tale of two seasons would be quite an understatement. They finished the regular season with a record of 15-14 and won one of their last five games. But they took the SEC tournament as a new beginning and won the first three games to get to the championship only to lose to Florida by two. Looking back now maybe they should've been given some consideration by the NCAA committee for their strong finish. But maybe that snub is what they needed to re-motivate them to finish strong in the NIT. In getting to the NIT Championship game SC had to beat Western Kentucky, Florida St, Cincinnati and Louisville coached by The Rick Petino. The Louisville team was only one year removed from the Final Four. I guess it's pretty safe to say that Coach Dave Odom is off the hot seat and the chants of "fire Odom" won't be heard till next year. It seems as though Dave Odom has become the basketball equivalent to Clemson's Tommy Bowden. Every year they seem to be on the hot seat when the team is struggling but somehow they find ways to finish strong and take the bull's-eye off their chest.

But something really has to be said for this team to even be playing in the NIT this year. I see it this way. If you end up in the NIT and win or finish strong, you should take that extra playing time and experience and improve upon your season the next year. Well SC didn't do that, in fact their season was worse than last year. Granted it is always nice to win a championship in anything but it's a dubious record to win the NIT back to back. I might be in the minority on this but I view this SC season as a failure in that they didn't apply anything from last years tournament to improve this year. In the grand picture of college basketball, it is better to lose in the first round of the NCAA than to win the NIT. Let’s just hope that SC won’t be playing for a three-peat, then again as a Clemson fan I could care less

Will Ferrell's new movie Talladega Nights

Can you imagine what would you would get if you stuck Days of Thunder and Anchorman into a blender, the result would be Will Ferrell's new movie Talladega Nights. When I first heard about it, I had my reservations but then again, I don't recall seing a Ferrell movie that hasn't made me laugh. Okay, there was that bad Bewitched movie and maybe Kicking & Screaming but other than that he's put out funny-as-hell movies. This movie doesn't come out till August 4th and I'll be at the theater that night.

The film tells the story of NASCAR stock car racing sensation Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) whose "win at all costs" approach has made him a national hero. He and his loyal racing partner, childhood friend Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), are a fearless duo -- dubbed "Thunder" and "Lightning" by their fans for their ability to finish so many races in the #1 and #2 positions, with Cal always in second place. When a flamboyant French Formula One driver, Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), challenges the "Thunder" and "Lightning" for the supremacy of NASCAR, Ricky Bobby must face his own demons and fight Girard for the right to be known as racing's top driver.

Here's the trailer and click here for link to the movie.

Clemson's season ends at Louisville in the NIT

Clemson's roller coaster basketball season came to an end on Monday night at Louisville, losing 74-68. When it comes to Clemson basketball, sometimes just getting to the NIT can be considered a successful season but this one is more of a disappointment. That is that Clemson started the season 11-0 and a chance to be 16-0 heading into a home game against Duke. But it was after that 11th win that things took a turn south. That's when Clemson lost one of it's premier defenders on a team that lives off of its defense. Sophomore James Mays was suspended from the team for Academics reasons. It was a huge blow for the team and it was evident from the next game which was a loss to Georgia, then a loss to Elon. In a 13 game stretch after losing him, Clemson went 3-10. But you've got to give the team and Coach Purnell credit, just when they could've folded and mailed in the remaining season they found new life and finished the season winning five of their last 7 games including the loss to Louisville.

For Coach Oliver Purnell this was his third season and each season he has increased the number of wins. He is building this program the right way and will eventually have Clemson playing for ACC Championships.

The outlook for next year looks good. Though Clemson will lose Akin Akingbala, Shawan Robinson and Steve Allen, we have four solid freshmen coming in next year. Those freshmen are PF Trevor Booker 6'7 215, C Karolis Petrukonis 6'11 260, PF A.J Tyler 6'9 225, and SG David Potter 6'5 185. They are all 3 star recruits and Booker and Tyler are expecting to see alot of playing time next season. It's not known yet if James Mays will return to the team next year. Top returning players for next year will be KC Rivers, Sam Perry, Cliff Hammonds, Julius Powell and Vernon Hamilton.

Clemson finished one win shy of 20 for the season. With the players coming in and returning players, 20 wins next year looks inevitable. I'm thinking at least 23.

Terrell Owens dons the Star, signs with the Cowboys!!

In a move that both parties hope will lead them to the SuperBowl, Terrell Owens signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He signed a 3 year 25 million contract, a contract that will make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL. That was one of the issues that led to his eventual release from the Eagles. Everyone knows what his past has been so there is no need to go into an explanation.

As a diehard Cowboys fan, I'm happy in the fact that we now have the games best receiver. Dallas hasn't had a receiver of this quality since Michael Irvin. He will significantly help this offense and get Dallas back into the playoffs. He will take away the double coverage on Terry Glenn, open up the underneath for TE Jason Witten and will take away the 7-8 man fronts that RB Julius Jones and Marion Barber have been dealing with. By helping the offense he'll help the defense in the fact that the defense will be on the sidelines resting and will be playing with a lead more than not.

Now, I'm going to treat TO much like I did with Deion Sanders. Before Deion joined the Cowboys I could care less about him as a player or person but once he dons the star and shut down wr's I became a fan of him. Now if TO comes in and gives us everything he has and doesn't cause any on field or off field problems then I will embrace him. But part of me can't help but feel like we are selling our soul to the devil with this deal. After all he did disgrace the Cowboys when he ran to mid field after scoring a td and spiked the ball on the star. If he puts up the numbers and keeps his mouth shut, he'll eventually win over fans but as of now, he's kinda on parole until he proves himself.

Cowboys release Keyshawn Johnson, possible TO signing!!

I'm not sure whether this news gets me excited or upset. Dallas released WR Keyshawn Johnson today, a move that will save the Cowboys from paying him a $1 Mil roster bonus that was due. Keyshawn while with Dallas for the last two years hasn't been he problem child that he looked like in Tampa Bay. He was very productive but he was getting up there in age at 34, old by NFL standards. As for my view on his release, I'm not sure that Dallas would have made this move if Jerry and Bill didn't already have someone in mind to fill that void. Terrell Owens would no doubt fill that void and would immediately upgrade the Dallas offense. TO brings with him a lot of baggage but also that big play possibility. You have to weigh which is more important, team chemistry or the ability to stretch defenses.

I'm a Bill Parcells fan and I trust what he thinks and the moves that he makes. So if he thinks that he can handle TO, then like Mark and I say, in Bill we trust. I think he would be the difference maker that we need to get back to the SuperBowl where we belong. We haven't been to one since we beat the Steelers in 1996. We haven't had one of these back breaker play makers since Michael went down with his spinal injury in 2000. Can you imagine the big plays that we could make with strong armed Drew Bledsoe throwing deep TO and even Terry Glenn. It would open up our offense by stretching defenses and then you have to account for RB's Julius Jones and Marion Barber, that offense would be nasty.

Well I guess I'll get off the fence and decide that I'd be happy having TO on my Cowboys cause, In Bill we trust.

Citadel Baseball Coach Fred Jordan get win #500

Congratulations to Coach Jordan on picking up career win # 500. It happened this past Friday night when the Bulldogs beat Butler 11-2 at Joe Riley park. In achieving this mark, Jordan became the quickest coach to reach this milestone. He is also only the second coach to reach 500 wins. The other coach was the legendary Chal Port who took 24 seasons to reach 500, a mark Coach Jordan achieved in only 15 years. By the time Jordan rolls into his 24th season he should be well beyond Coach Ports career win total of 641 which took him 27 years.

Here are some other highlights from Coach Jordan's career so far. SoCon season champs 4 years. SoCon tournament champs 6 times along with 6 NCAA tournament appearances. He is a Three-time SoCon Coach-Of-The-Year. He has coached 41 All-conference players and 37 SoCon All-Tournament players and 6 tournament MVP's. He has also produced 19 players that were drafted in the MLB amateur draft.

I am personally proud of the success Coach Jordon is having as I played ball for him at Citadel. Though it was only for one year and I didn't play, it was well worth being on the team. I grew up playing baseball, played every year of my life from tee-ball all the way to Citadel. I figured I knew everything there was to know about baseball when I entered Coach's program. Well I quickly realized that I knew nothing. I never realized how much of a mental game it was until coach gave us a two page test, of which I ended up scoring in the 70's. He runs a very physical program, pitchers do nothing but run if they aren't involved in any drills. I used to be in pretty good shape and playing for him was one of the reasons. We had to run a mile in less than 6 minutes and if you didn't get it, you'd have to continue running it till you did, though not the same day. Well I was lucky to of run it in 5:46. It was pretty much a dead sprint and I thought I was going to die at the end.

The year I played we had a losing regular season but ended up catching fire in the SoCon tournament and won that. We ended up playing in the Clemson regionals, losing to Clemson 5-1, beat Virginia Tech 4-3 then lost to Notre Dame 5-1. That same season we beat South Carolina. One of my favorite memories was of him getting his head shaved on the mound after we finished our celebrating. He made a bet to the team that if we won the tournament he shave his head. He is truly a great coach and Citadel is proud to have him.

Congrats on 500 and hoping for many many more.

Donut Cheesburger?? Um no thanks.

Now I love food and it shows. I can pretty much eat anything, except Sushi and liver, well throw in meat loaf while we're at it, but I'm not sure I could chomp away on a Donut Burger. Joining two of the best things in American culture just doesn't sound too appealing to me. Rather it would join the list above. I just can't imagine the taste of a hot glazed donut then biting into a beef patty with cheese.

Who would you think created such a burger, a cop, some fat guy that doesn't watch biggest loser, a Minor league baseball team? Well if you guessed the later you're correct. An independent team in Sauget, Ill called the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League created this crazy calorie packed burger. They were out to create "Baseball's Best Burger", though that is up for debate. This is the third year in a row that they have created a crazy calorie driven meal. Two years ago they served up a hotdog topped with two strips of bacon, sauteed onions, sauerkraut and cheddar cheese sauce. Last year they created the "Swiss Brat", a bratwurst with a slice of swiss cheese in the middle topped with sauerkraut.

Bill Veeck, owner of the Charleston Riverdogs class A minor league team has well known as one of the zaniest promoters, with promotions such as Silent night, no attendance night, free Vasectomy. Well I'd have to say that Grizzlies general manager Tony Funderburg is fast becoming one of the crazyiest ballpark food creators.

If you want to get your hands and colon on this burger you'd have to buy a ticket or just go down to your neighborhood Krispy Kreme, buy a dozen glazed donuts, light up the grill for a good ole American donut Burger. Let me know how it tastes, not sure I'll be trying one anytime soon.

Citadel's Pat Dennis resigns as Head Basketball Coach

Pat Dennis announced his resignation today ending a 14 year tenure as men's head basketball coach. His resignation today marks the end of a very up and down career. He holds the record for most career wins with 158 and the dubious record for most losses with 232. Dennis led a clean program, graduated his players and held the players to the same standard the citadel holds it cadets to. But unfortunately for Dennis none of that resulted into wins on the court on a regular basis. In the 14 years as head coach, Citadel only had 3 winning seasons, two of which were back to back. From 2000 to 2002 Citadels respective records were 16-12 and 17-12. Since that 2002 year the Citadel has gone backwards, posting a league record of 10-53 in four years, including a record of 1-14 this past year. The one win was in the last conference game against Wofford and that win also broke a 24 game conference losing streak.

Citadel has never historically had a great basketball program, Football and Baseball is where Citadel hangs it proverbial hat. This change has been in the coming the last 4 years. Dennis's contract hadn't been extended since that last winning season in 2002. I'm not sure who AD Les Robinson has in mind but a new face will be welcomed no matter who it is. Citadel needs a fresh start and maybe some young blood to come in an energize this dormant program.

The change will hopefully start putting supporters back into the seats as attendance has really fallen off. In fact the only game that fans really attend is the C of C game and that's usually not a contest the last 10 minutes.

I wish Pat Dennis good luck in his future endeavors.

Barry Bonds...Real or a Fraud?

I'm sure you've already heard the lastest news regarding Barry Bonds and his doping. Well if not, there is a new book out that details the drugs and reasons for Barry taking performance inhancing substances. In their book "Game of Shadows", Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, write in detail: the drugs that Barry took, the method, when he started and why he started.

Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams are both writers for the San Francisco Chronicle. They received the George Polk Award for their investigation into BALCO and allegations amongst high profile athletes like Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi. They based this book off of thousands of pages of documents and interviews with roughly 200 people. The book says that the reason Bonds started taking the steriods was because he was jealous of the attention and the stats that Mark McGwire was getting, McGwire hit a then record 70 Home Runs in 1998. It also goes on to list the types of drugs he was ingesting and injecting into himself. Those drugs included: Winstrol, Deca-Durabolin, Insulin, Testosterone decanoate, Human growth hormones, Norbolethone, Trenbolone and Clomid. Winstrol is a popular anabolic steriod. Deca-Durabolin promotes excellent size and strength. Trenbolone enhances the muscle tone of cattle.

I personally have never been much of a Barry Bonds fan, a grew up watching Mark McGwire and tried to copy his batting stance when I played baseball. I was in awe watching him belt 400 foot homers never thinking about the possibility that he might be on some kind of performace enhanced drugs. When the scandel took over baseball last spring and McGwire took oath before congress I still held out hope that Mark would let it be known that he was clean. Well he did the opposite and basically pleaded the 5th to any question that was asked of him. That all but assured the fact that the numbers he put up just weren't natural, it was tainted. The same applies to Barry Bonds. He will forever be a scar on baseball when we all look back on the game in 25 to 50 years. His ranking as a home run king will be in the books but not diservingly so.

As a Braves fan I would rather the career home run leader be anyone bu Barry Bonds.
We may never know 100% of the truth but with Bonds you're either for him or against him, I'm in the later. If I had a vote in the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't elect Bonds nor McGwire and not even Sosa and Palmerio. They are all stains on the game that is America's Past time.

USA to open World Baseball Classic Tuesday vs Mexico

USA opens play Tuesday afternoon against Mexico at 4pm. USA is the heavy favorite to win this inaugural event that has a similar format that is used for World Cup for soccer. USA is in Pool B along with Canada, South Africa and before mentioned Mexico. It is round-robin format so each team will face one another and the top 2 teams will advance to the second round. Here is the roster for the USA team.

The USA team is represented by two Atlanta Braves in Chipper Jones and Jeff Francoeur.
Other notables on the team include, Roger Clemens, Dontrelle Willis, Derrick Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Johnny Damon and Ken Griffey Jr.

Click here for the complete breakdown of players with MLB teams.

List of teams and pools.

I think this classic is a great thing since the Olympics voted to remove baseball as one of it's sports. I only wish that there could be a better time to play it. I say in the future we can afford to eliminate the AllStar game in favor of playing this in the mid season when everyone is in game mode. Unfortunately I don't think this is the best group of players that the USA could produce but as is with all new things, there will be some growing pains and lessons learned. So I'm sure the Classic in another 4 years will have a different date with more available players.

Go team USA, bring the championship home.

Kirby Puckett dies at age 45

Kirby Puckett , one of baseball's greatest players and by far the Twins most beloved player, passed away tonight of complications caused by a stroke he suffered yesterday. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001 after a spectacular 12 year career in which he compiled 2,304 hits, 414 double, 207 HRs, 1085 RBIs and a career batting avg of .318. He was a 10 time All-star, a 6 time Gold Glover winner, 1991 ALCS MVP and 1993 All-Star MVP. He led the league in hits 3 straight years and 4 overall. He will be remembered for his enthusiastic play and his love for the game. He was a key member of the two World Championships the Twins won in 1987 and 1991. His career was cut short when he was hit by a pitch that broke his jaw. He later was diagnosed with glaucoma after he woke up one morning with no vision in his right eye.

I will always remember Kirby for his spectacular play that cost my Atlanta Braves their first World Series title. He pretty much carried the Twins in game 6, which for Minnesota was an elimination game. He leaped high on the centerfield wall to rob Ron Gant of at least a double then hit a walk-off-homer to send the series to a deciding game 7 and ultimate World Series Championship.

Rest in peace Kirby, you will be missed.

Davidson does the Charleston on way to Championship win

Davidson provided a big statement in it's SoCon title clinching win over UT Chattanooga winning big 80-55. Davidson finished with a league record of 10-5 not quite up to last years standard of 16-0 but this is much sweeter as they clinched a spot in the NCAA tournament. On the way to the Conference Title Davidson rallied to beat The Citadel 79-73 then finished off #2nd seeded Elon 65-58. For Davidson this will be their first NCAA appearance since 2002 when they lost to the 4th seeded Ohio St Buckeyes.

Davidson placed three players on the All-tournament 1st team in Ian Johnson, Matt McKillop and Brendan Winters, also on the team was Citadel's J'Mel Everhart, UNC Greensboro's Kyle Hines, and App St's DJ Thompson.

Tournament MVP award was given to Davidson's Brendan Winters, for the tournament he was a combined 23-45 for 105 points, was 8 of 16 on 3 point attempts, 19 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals.

Congrats to Davidson and hope you represent the Southern Conference well.

Tye Hill moving up draft boards to possible 1st Round

Tye Hill, the speedy Clemson DB,and local St. George resident, put on quite a show at the NFL combine this past week and because of that, he is looking more like a 1st round pick. Before the combine it looked as if he would be more of a mid 2nd round pick. At the combine, where NFL prospects come to show their respective skills, Hill posted the fastest time of the 350 participants, posting a time of 4.3 40 yard dash. He also tied for forth among defensive back with a vertical leap of 41 inches and was among only 20 players who posted a jump better than 40 inches. He was disappointed in his 40 time as his goal coming in was a blistering 4.2 but 4.3 isn't too bad.

Hill was recruited to be a running back at Clemson but with his speed and looking for more playing time, Hill approached the coaching staff before the 2003 season about moving to the defensive side of the ball where his speed could be utilized. He went through the growing pains of learning a new position his sophomore year but came on late to ignite a win against FESS and helped Clemson to win over Tennessee in the Peach Bowl. Junior year he was still developing his skills playing along side future 2nd round pick Justin Miller. He was often over looked and chose to return for his senior year to further develop his skills to better himself for life in the NFL. For the most part of his career he was also a track star but gave that up after his junior year to focus on football and it definitely paid off. The St, George resident will be presented with a key to the city in the next week.

I'm predicting that he's going to end up with New England who has had issues the last couple years with their db's and health.

Braves 2006, Who's here, who's gone.

The Braves in the offseason made quite a few moves to stabilize the batting order and to provide depth and consistency in the bullpen, which had a few holes last year. Two popular players that were traded or not resigned were Rafael Furcal and Johnny Estrada. Furcal chose the beach and life of LA over HotLanta while Estrada was traded to the Diamondbacks to make way for young Brian McCann. In return for Estrada, the Braves received RHP Lance Cormier and RHP Oscar Villarreal. The Braves known for a big acquisition each off season made another one in the form of Edgar Renteria, he was brought in to replace speedy Furcal. Jim Trabert was traded to Boston in exchange for Renteria. If you can imagine this, the Braves will be better off with Renteria offensively but will miss Furcal's cannon at short. The best offseason move the Braves made may have been in dealing Kolb back to Milwaukee for Wes Obermueller. Here's a list of who's new and who's gone.
Who's here:
SS Edgar Renteria
C Todd Pratt
OF Matt Diaz
RHP Brad Baker
RHP Lance Cormier
RHP Oscar Villarreal
RHP Wed Obermueller
LHP Mike Remlinger
PC Roger McDowell

Notables gone:

SS Rafael Furcal
C Johnny Estrada
INF Julio Franco
P Kyle Farnsworth
PC Leo Mazzone

Braves open Spring Training schedule with a 3-2 loss to the LA Dogers

It's not the way you want to start spring training but then again it's only spring training. The Braves opened up their spring schedule today with a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. But the loss wasn't that bad as all 3 runs the Dodgers scored were unearned thanks to 3 errrors, one each by Jorge Sosa, Wilson Betemit and Cesar Crespo. At the plate the Braves were led by Todd Pratt who was 1-2 double rbi. The Dodgers scored all 3 in the first two innings, 2 in first, 1 in second. The Braves answered with 1 in the top 2nd and another run in the top 8th but the 3 errors loomed to big to overcome.

The good news here is that the Braves only played 2 regulars on offense with Andruw getting one at bat and Langerhans getting 3 with one hit.

Same two teams will play again on Friday afternoon with Tomko starting for LA and John Thompson for Atlanta.
