The All-Playboy Marriage is coming to an end

This blog is dedicated to keeping friends and fellow fans up to date on current sports news and for expressing my opinions. It's also a forum for other miscellanious things.
South Carolina successfully defended its NIT Title beating Michigan tonight by the score of 76 64. Yes I meant to say South Carolina because I refuse to call them USC since they aren't the real USC. It's hard for me to say nice things about SC since I'm a huge Clemson fan but I've got to tip my hat to them. I'm not sure if this is a dubious record or not but they are just the second school to ever win the NIT back to back. They joined St. Johns as the only schools with that distinction. Though when St. Johns won their titles when the NIT was the only post-season tournament and not the second tier tournament the NIT is considered to be today.
But SC deserves a lot of credit. I've never seen a team get kicked to the ground get up and just dominate like they did at the end of the year. In fact to say that this season was a tale of two seasons would be quite an understatement. They finished the regular season with a record of 15-14 and won one of their last five games. But they took the SEC tournament as a new beginning and won the first three games to get to the championship only to lose to Florida by two. Looking back now maybe they should've been given some consideration by the NCAA committee for their strong finish. But maybe that snub is what they needed to re-motivate them to finish strong in the NIT. In getting to the NIT Championship game SC had to beat Western Kentucky, Florida St, Cincinnati and Louisville coached by The Rick Petino. The Louisville team was only one year removed from the Final Four. I guess it's pretty safe to say that Coach Dave Odom is off the hot seat and the chants of "fire Odom" won't be heard till next year. It seems as though Dave Odom has become the basketball equivalent to Clemson's Tommy Bowden. Every year they seem to be on the hot seat when the team is struggling but somehow they find ways to finish strong and take the bull's-eye off their chest.
But something really has to be said for this team to even be playing in the NIT this year. I see it this way. If you end up in the NIT and win or finish strong, you should take that extra playing time and experience and improve upon your season the next year. Well SC didn't do that, in fact their season was worse than last year. Granted it is always nice to win a championship in anything but it's a dubious record to win the NIT back to back. I might be in the minority on this but I view this SC season as a failure in that they didn't apply anything from last years tournament to improve this year. In the grand picture of college basketball, it is better to lose in the first round of the NCAA than to win the NIT. Let’s just hope that SC won’t be playing for a three-peat, then again as a Clemson fan I could care less
Clemson's roller coaster basketball season came to an end on Monday night at Louisville, losing 74-68. When it comes to Clemson basketball, sometimes just getting to the NIT can be considered a successful season but this one is more of a disappointment. That is that Clemson started the season 11-0 and a chance to be 16-0 heading into a home game against Duke. But it was after that 11th win that things took a turn south. That's when Clemson lost one of it's premier defenders on a team that lives off of its defense. Sophomore James Mays was suspended from the team for Academics reasons. It was a huge blow for the team and it was evident from the next game which was a loss to Georgia, then a loss to Elon. In a 13 game stretch after losing him, Clemson went 3-10. But you've got to give the team and Coach Purnell credit, just when they could've folded and mailed in the remaining season they found new life and finished the season winning five of their last 7 games including the loss to Louisville.
In a move that both parties hope will lead them to the SuperBowl, Terrell Owens signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He signed a 3 year 25 million contract, a contract that will make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL. That was one of the issues that led to his eventual release from the Eagles. Everyone knows what his past has been so there is no need to go into an explanation.
I'm not sure whether this news gets me excited or upset. Dallas released WR Keyshawn Johnson today, a move that will save the Cowboys from paying him a $1 Mil roster bonus that was due. Keyshawn while with Dallas for the last two years hasn't been he problem child that he looked like in Tampa Bay. He was very productive but he was getting up there in age at 34, old by NFL standards. As for my view on his release, I'm not sure that Dallas would have made this move if Jerry and Bill didn't already have someone in mind to fill that void. Terrell Owens would no doubt fill that void and would immediately upgrade the Dallas offense. TO brings with him a lot of baggage but also that big play possibility. You have to weigh which is more important, team chemistry or the ability to stretch defenses.
1921 - Cy Denneny (Ottawa Senators) scored six goals against the Hamilton Tigers.
Davidson provided a big statement in it's SoCon title clinching win over UT Chattanooga winning big 80-55. Davidson finished with a league record of 10-5 not quite up to last years standard of 16-0 but this is much sweeter as they clinched a spot in the NCAA tournament. On the way to the Conference Title Davidson rallied to beat The Citadel 79-73 then finished off #2nd seeded Elon 65-58. For Davidson this will be their first NCAA appearance since 2002 when they lost to the 4th seeded Ohio St Buckeyes.
It's not the way you want to start spring training but then again it's only spring training. The Braves opened up their spring schedule today with a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. But the loss wasn't that bad as all 3 runs the Dodgers scored were unearned thanks to 3 errrors, one each by Jorge Sosa, Wilson Betemit and Cesar Crespo. At the plate the Braves were led by Todd Pratt who was 1-2 double rbi. The Dodgers scored all 3 in the first two innings, 2 in first, 1 in second. The Braves answered with 1 in the top 2nd and another run in the top 8th but the 3 errors loomed to big to overcome.
It's tournament time as leagues around the country begin their respective end of year tournaments to determine who will represent them in the NCAA tournament. The stakes are high, win and you go to the big dance, lose and your season is over. The tournament is being held at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Clemson continued its hot play of late winning another close game against the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The win for the Tigers gives them 6 ACC victories on the year, a feat that hadn't been accomplished since the 1997-1998 season. For Clemson they move to 17-11 (6-9) while V Tech drops to 14-14 (4-11).
